The Snowflake Ski Club was founded in 1922, in Westby Wisconsin, a peaceful community in southwest Wisconsin with Norwegian roots.
Based in Timber Coulee, our ski team aims to bring the tradition of Nordic skiing to the younger generation.
About Us
Throughout the years the club has experiences for local youth interested in the Nordic Skiing experience and tradition. The Snowflake Nordic ski club started in 2010, under the direction of Dan Goltz. The initial group consisted of 43 skiers increasing to 70 participants over the early years. The club began as a recreational program, hosting fun races and ski outings primarily for club members. The Nordic Club exists as a branch of the Snowflake Ski Club, which has a long history of developing local jumpers and hosting international jumpers. The club loaned us money to purchase our initial fleet of Nordic ski gear. Through the years the club has met at multiple locations including the Westby Rod and Gun Club, Viroqua Hills Golf Course, Viroqua VFW, Prairie Wind, and presently meeting at Timber Coulee. The Pandemic years led to a greatly reduced program with fewer outings.
In 2023 we re-vamped the program skiers who want to tran regularly and travel to compete. The Club joined the Wisconsin Nordic Ski League in an effort to assist our local skiers in competing on the state and regional level. The goal is for skiers to develop proficient skating and classical technique and to build cardiovascular fitness while developing a love for the sport.
Past coaches include: Michelle Drucker, Jerry McIntire, Nick Wroblewski, Bjorn Bergman, Bryn Hawklove, Jen Bjorkman, Douglas Hurth, Chris and Heidi Jackson, James Gimurtu, Anna Bookstrom, Bill Humphrey, and Thom and Dominic Falter.
Dan started skiing as a youngster with his family in Wausa, WI. He chased his older brother Greg (an elite Junior skier) around and they both raced at Wausau West High School for coach Jim Gallagher and with the Gallagher boys Phil and Eric. Fond memories include skiing at Brokaw, Underdown and racing in the Kortelopet. In 1989 Dan enrolled at UW- Green Bay and was on the school's first Nordic Ski Team, coached by Butch Reimer. Dan competed in two NCAA championships, several USSA National Championships and Olympic Trials, and the 1996 World University Games in Jaca, Spain. He was the assistant coach at UWGB while completing a Mater's degree in Environmental Science.
After College he lived in Hawaii for 10 years running around in a Speedo as a triathlete, and met his lovely wife Tracey. They now live in Viroqua and have two girls. Dan started the Snowflake Nordic Ski Club in 2010 with friend Chris Jackson and has been involved every year since then.
Through skiing, he has made friends who live across the US and many who are involved in the sport as coaches or working in the industry. He believes that Nordic skiing can teach you how to work hard, set goals, succeed, and learn though failure. Sportsmanship, humility, and above all, fair play are the virtues that he values in competition.
